of not-feminism

R: Wow, I still can’t believe this is happening! Have you thought of a name yet?

Me: Yes, Z if it’s a boy, M if it’s a girl.

R: Nice. Why M? It’s so old fashioned and boring!

*awkward silence*

Me: I want to name the baby after Mister’s mom.

R: Oh.

*awkward silence*

R: So what do you want? A boy or a girl?

Me: A boy.

*awkward silence*

R: Why a boy? I always thought of you as a feminist.

Me: I am a feminist. Why did that even come up?

R: Because you said you would prefer a baby boy over a baby girl.

Me: But what does feminism have to do with whether I want a boy or a girl?

*awkward silence*

*more conversation that leads nowhere*

*situation escalates*

R: Oh please, it is people like you who claim to be feminists but will choose genders when having babies.

Me: Hey, you asked if I wanted a boy or a girl! Besides, if I want a girl, am I not still choosing one gender over the other?

R: But educated people should always opt for a girl child.

*awkward silence*

Me: I’m sorry, but do you realize that it’s not biologically possible to choose a girl child even if you want one?

R: But still. At least you could pretend to want a girl.

*awkward silence*

Me: I give up. Maybe it’s really difficult for you to think with your head stuck that far up your ass.

*can’t believe I just actually said that out loud*

*shit, she’s never going to talk to me again*

*Thank god.*

I’m laughing at  this conversation right now. Are you?

    1. That was hilarious, Ana. If the truth were known, the only thing we want is for the child to be healthy and be here as soon as possible. I wish you an easy birth. When you hold that new born child in your arms after you give birth – the joy is indescribable .

  1. ha ha ha..
People think that feminism is a secret society/ religion/ group..
What they don’t understand is that it is a choice/ outlook and your attitude..

I am a feminist and would be happy with a son too so that I can raise him to be a feminist..

    1. Touche to that! 😊
What the world needs is honest people bringing up more honest people, regardless of their gender.
Why does it matter whether you want a boy or a girl as long as you’re giving them the right values?

  2. I interpret that conversation as, You were being trolled. This reminded me of something a friend of mine is fond of saying. This friend works in IT but has a bachelors in Philosophy. So people are fond of asking him: “What is your favorite philosophy?” To which he answers, “let me see, oh ya FUCK OFF”

Sometimes when people ask questions they are less seeking an answer and more seeking validation their opinion or to invalidate you. I think your response to obvious trolling, while might be coming from a place of anger, is a direct result of the trolling. And I’m glad you can laugh at the situation.

    1. Hey Dave, so good to hear from you! How have you been? I don’t think I’ve read anything new from you in a long time now – I hope all is well with you!
To be completely honest, I can laugh at anything. Nothing seems to matter too much in the long run, and I learned that early on. Also, trolls make for great blog fodder. Btw, your friend is very wise, and I’m pretty sure going to use his line the next time I’m being trolled just to see what happens! 🙂

  3. And so the ignorance continues. Really…I am not sure I would have handled it any differently. Just because you are a feminist doesn’t mean you have to be anti-male. And I love that I was able to have one of each. But, still though I wanted a healthy child for my second child I wanted a boy to even out having had a girl. 😀 One of each. 😀 Thinking like her is what gives Feminism a bad name and makes it harder for male oriented societies to not feel threatened.

    1. Besides, feminist or not, we’re all human. Why is it so shocking to want a boy or a girl? I haven’t yet met a pregnant woman who doesn’t secretly yearn for a certain gender. It’s really no big deal.

    2. Exactly. This whole conversation was so lame, I don’t even know why I allowed myself to get sucked into it.
You’re lucky to have one of each – it’s precisely why I want a boy. We already have a beautiful little girl in the family..

  4. Hey today I was just think of one such discussion with my hubby long back.. when probably I had this wrong notion that all ppl wanting a boy child are cruel! Actually! Until my husband brought in another perspective of why he wanting a boy is as good as and as similar as me wanting a girl & how we both should be happy about any gender that is born to us..
Coincidence that I came across this article today, that was going on in my mind!😊

  5. I just fell in love with you !
BTW,I think it is perfect for a feminist to want a boy. Its easy to teach girls their rights. Harder to get the male head over how to treat a woman right. The more feminists have boys, the better.

        1. I have to say your little girl is really expressive! She raises some very valid points, and it makes me wonder why more parents are not teaching their children (boys) the value of equality.
This is why I will raise my boy differently. Thanks for sharing this!

          1. It is too late for me to have a baby boy. That’s why I don’t lose an opportunity to encourage young women of child bearing age to have as many baby boys as they can (as if they can choose !) and make the future at least better for women than it is now .
